One Nation to pick up 53 seats: Tony Abbott cannot save the Liberals from themselves

New polling released this week by the RedBridge Group and Accent Research showed that if an election was held now, One Nation would replace the Coalition as the Opposition by picking winning a median of 53 seats in the House of Representatives.

One Nation would win between 46-59 seats according to the poll, flipping several Labor-held seats and completely decimating the Coalition. Labor was predicted to hold the slimmest of majorities with 76 (range 70-82) while the Coalition would only win 12 (range 7-21). The Coalition would lose 37 seats to One Nation while Labor would lose 16.

There are 150 seats in the House of Representatives, with a minimum of 76 needed to form a majority government.

Senator Pauline Hanson and Barnaby Joyce MP have been quick to point out that it’s only another poll, and the only polls which really count are elections.

“What’s before us is an incredible responsibility placed on us by the Australian people,” Barnaby said. “We’ll rise to the responsibility, but we’re not going to get carried away with what may or may not be down the track,” Pauline said.

“He is right to say so. With One Nation’s stunning election results in South Australia and Farrer there are several indications a fundamental change in Australia’s political landscape is occurring, but it’s a fact that political opinion in Australia is quite volatile at the moment.

“The challenge for One Nation is to maintain and build on this momentum, not take any support for granted, and keep trying to earn votes (as opposed to the major parties which just try to buy votes).

“Every volunteer, every supporter and every donation matters more than ever. Be the change that you want to see.”
