The shooting took place at the entrance of the ballroom of the Washington Hilton hotel, at the last security checkpoint before the event.
According to the police, the perpetrator breached the security checkpoint and opened fire, then tried to move towards the ballroom, where about 2,500 guests and the President of the United States were present.
According to the chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, Jeffrey Carroll, he had a hunting rifle, a pistol, and many knives. Witnesses also report that he may have gathered long-barreled weapons in an unguarded area near the entrance, where carts were stored and there was no security. He is said to have removed the weapon from a bag.
The perpetrator opened fire at the entrance of the ballroom, firing between four and eight shots, injuring a Secret Service agent. Then, the agents evacuated the ballroom and the perpetrator was arrested on the spot.
According to investigators, he acted alone. Charges have been filed against him.
The suspect, 31-year-old Cole Allen from California, according to sources, worked as a teacher at C2 Education and had previously graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology.
