Half a Million Palestinians Face Starvation as Winter Arrives and Severe Funding Cuts Gut UN Food Aid

By LauraAboli

The UN World Food Program announced a drastic reduction in its operations across the Gaza Strip today, stripping roughly 500,000 Palestinians of essential food aid just as winter sets in.

According to a WFP statement, acute funding shortfalls have forced the agency to scale back its reach from 1.6 million to 1.1 million vulnerable people, while simultaneously slashing remaining food rations in half and cutting daily hot meal distributions from 250,000 to 150,000.

The severe cutbacks extend into hard-to-reach zones, including areas adjacent to the Israeli military’s self-designated perimeter, where families will now receive hot meals only every other day.

WFP data reveals that 1.4 million Palestinians—representing 67 percent of Gaza’s population—face crisis-level food insecurity or worse, with 200,000 enduring emergency conditions that require immediate intervention to prevent starvation. The agency cautioned that fragile improvements observed since the October 2025 ceasefire risk immediate reversal under the current deficit.

The aid crisis has similarly struck the occupied West Bank, where the UN agency was forced to cut its coverage by half, leaving 200,000 people without assistance.

To sustain baseline humanitarian operations across Gaza and the West Bank through March 2027, the agency stated that it urgently requires 450 million dollars in emergency funding to prevent a complete collapse of food security for millions under occupation.
