Tariff-Free Unknown Foreign Ground Beef Floods the Market — National File

President Trump plans to suspend duties on 300,000 metric tons of imported ground beef for 90 days, a short-term intervention that threatens to undercut American ranchers while the domestic herd sits at a multidecade low.

Politico reported that Trump said suppliers would sell the beef 25% below current market prices. The White House did not identify the supplying countries, and industry groups told Politico they were blindsided by the announcement.

The White House says the plan will ease a short-term supply crunch. But ranchers say flooding the market with subsidized foreign product will crush the price signals needed to rebuild the U.S. herd.

Good Ranchers warned that the tariff-free imports would put new pressure on domestic producers already facing drought, high feed costs, and shrinking cattle inventory. The company also noted that consumers will not be told which countries supplied the meat through mandatory country-of-origin labels.

Baron Coleman highlighted Trump’s refusal to name the countries involved when asked about the deal.

Rep. Thomas Massie has pointed to a domestic alternative. In an earlier post, Massie promoted the PRIME Act, his bipartisan measure to let states expand intrastate sales of meat from custom-slaughter facilities.

“Groceries are too high! The bill I’ve spent the most effort on since I’ve been in office is the PRIME Act… to lower beef & pork prices while giving farmers more opportunity.” — Rep. Thomas Massie

Foreign-beef safety concerns are not imaginary. China has rejected individual Argentine beef shipments after finding residues of chloramphenicol, an antibiotic banned in food animals. It remains Argentina’s largest beef market, but the rejections show why transparency matters before American families get handed unidentified imported product.
