Russian forces have seized the heavily fortified city from Ukrainian troops in the northwest of Donbass
The Russian Defense Ministry has released a video featuring highlights from the battle for the city of Konstantinovka, after Moscow announced the full liberation of the key Ukrainian stronghold on Friday.
Konstantinovka is part of the Slavyansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration, a string of settlements in the northwest of Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR). The agglomeration has been heavily fortified by Ukrainian forces and remains the last major stronghold under Kiev’s control in the region.
Footage released by the military shortly after the announcement shows moments from the fierce battle for the city. The video features assorted drone and artillery strikes on Ukrainian troops, as well as Russian soldiers unfurling the country’s flags at positions they had captured. The city has been heavily damaged in weeks of fighting, with many buildings reduced to rubble.
The liberation of Konstantinovka has been touted as a major achievement by the Russian leadership. The city is located at the southernmost tip of the fortified agglomeration, some 15km southeast of Kramatorsk, with the smaller town of Druzhkovka lying in between.
