Washington and Moscow are now locked in a fast-moving escalation that’s no longer just about Ukraine. On July 10, Russia launched a wave of drone and missile strikes across Kyiv, killing 2 and injuring 26. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the assault involved 400 drones and 18 missiles, with damage reported in nearly every district. The timing wasn’t random. The strikes landed hours before U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Kuala Lumpur. Rubio called the conversation “frank,” but admitted there’s no roadmap for ending the war. Trump, meanwhile, authorized new weapons shipments to Ukraine, overriding a Pentagon freeze. He also told reporters, “We get a lot of bullshit thrown at us by Putin.”
The Kremlin isn’t backing down. Putin reportedly believes Russia’s battlefield edge is growing and that Ukraine’s defenses will collapse within months. Congress is now preparing a sanctions bill that would slap 50% tariffs on Russian oil, gas, and uranium. The bill targets not just Russia, but its customers. China and India buy 70% of Russian energy exports. Senator Lindsey Graham said, “The real focus of the bill is to hit the customers of Putin.” Trump would have broad discretion to enforce it.
On the ground, Russia’s drone campaign is intensifying. July 9 saw a record 728 drones launched in a single night. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted most, but the volume is straining resources. The U.S. resumed shipments of 155mm shells and GMLRS rockets, but Patriot interceptors remain in short supply. Zelenskyy is pushing for a Marshall Plan-style reconstruction effort, with $12 billion pledged at the Rome conference. The EU committed $2.7 billion. Zelenskyy also called for the seizure of frozen Russian assets, estimated at $450 billion.
Then came the killing. On July 10, Colonel Ivan Voronych of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) was shot five times with a silenced pistol in a Kyiv parking lot. Surveillance footage shows the shooter approaching on foot and fleeing seconds later. Voronych was reportedly involved in sabotage operations against Russia. Pro-Kremlin channels celebrated the hit. Russian war correspondent Alexander Kots posted, “The enemy should be afraid on his own territory.” Ukrainian authorities launched a manhunt, but no suspect has been named.
The message from Moscow is clear. There are no safe zones. Not in Kyiv. Not in the diplomatic corridors. Not in the parking lot of a residential building. The war is expanding in scope, and the lines between battlefield and capital are blurring.
