Massive Explosion at Alberta Military Base Kills and Injures Troops, Hospitals Reportedly Full with ‘Significant Casualties,’ Defense Minister Says ‘Situation Active and Delicate’ (VIDEOS) * The Gateway Pundit * by Cassandra MacDonald

An incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday sparked a major fire that spread beyond the base in high winds, and Defense Minister David McGuinty confirmed fatalities and injuries among military personnel.

McGuinty said he was “saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base.”

The defense minister described the situation as “very, very active and delicate,” according to an Associated Press report.

McGuinty did not provide numbers of people killed or information about the cause.

The RCMP said officers were called shortly after 4 p.m. after reports of a fire in a training area.

Reports described an explosion followed by the fire.

The Canadian Armed Forces, along with federal, provincial, and local crews, coordinated the response.

Wainwright provided hospital and firefighting support.

An Edmonton hospital went on code orange for a mass-casualty event.

An X user, @CrashMetaX, who was posting videos from the scene, wrote:

They are CURRENTLY filling the school right across from me!

The Municipal District of Wainwright reported that the fire crossed the base’s perimeter fence and spread rapidly due to high winds.

Firefighters from multiple jurisdictions responded.

Prime Minister Mark Carney posted that a “serious incident creating a major fire has occurred at CFB Wainwright” and that “our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected.”

Carney said the federal government was working closely with Alberta officials and local authorities, and that he and Premier Danielle Smith were in close contact.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said his province was sending assistance.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre said he had spoken with Carney and McGuinty to offer support and posted, “Pray for Wainwright, everyone.”

CFB Wainwright, about 180 kilometers southeast of Edmonton, is one of Canada’s busiest training bases. It houses the Canadian Maneuver Training Center, which runs realistic battlefield exercises, and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Center.

The fire also disrupted advance voting for Monday’s Alberta referendum on whether the province should begin a process that could lead to independence from Canada.

The situation is ongoing, and The Gateway Pundit will continue to provide updates as the situation unfolds.
