Mass layoffs of Haitian workers have begun across the United States after the Department of Homeland Security formally terminated Temporary Protected Status for roughly 350,000 Haitians, with employers receiving official alerts that their work authorizations are no longer valid.
According to a Washington Post report published Friday, the end of the protection is forcing airports, nursing homes, schools, and other employers to let workers go, creating immediate staffing pressures in essential industries.
The Trump administration’s decision, upheld by the Supreme Court, marks a decisive reversal of the previous open-ended extensions that allowed hundreds of thousands of Haitians to remain and work in the country for years.
The Haiti TPS designation was terminated effective July 27, following a determination by former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem that conditions in Haiti no longer met the program’s legal requirements.

The high court said the program for Haitians, one of the largest groups affected, could end on Monday. But attorneys for Haitian TPS holders said the protections should remain in effect until a lower court that had blocked the Trump administration from ending the program formally recognizes the Supreme Court decision.
In response to a question about the status of TPS for Haitians, a DHS spokesperson said in a statement that “activist lower court judges are openly defying the Supreme Court on this, but the end result will be the same. Haitians with TPS cannot and will not be able to stay.”
Earlier this week, DHS informed employers that it considered the “Haiti TPS designation … terminated, effective” immediately, and businesses have been laying workers off ever since.
The DHS spokesperson added that “Temporary Protected Status is exactly that —temporary.” “For too long, TPS has been allowed to function as a de facto amnesty program despite Congress never intending it to be permanent,” the spokesperson said.
A June Supreme Court ruling in Mullin v. Doe cleared the final legal hurdles, rejecting challenges that had previously delayed the end of the protections.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services notified employers that Employment Authorization Documents issued under the Haiti TPS categories are now invalid, requiring them to reverify workers on Form I-9.
Those who cannot provide current, valid work authorization cannot remain employed.
The result has been the widespread termination of these foreign workers.
White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller has been blunt about the consequences of this extended TPS.
Speaking to Fox News, Miller described the Biden administration’s decision to extend TPS to virtually every Haitian while simultaneously facilitating large-scale arrivals into communities such as Springfield, Ohio, and other Midwestern towns as “a formal policy of replacing the communities that lived in, settled, and sustained these communities for generations.”
Miller called it “one of the most heinous things this government has ever done” and stated clearly that under President Trump, the illegal alien Haitians are going back to Haiti, where they can build their own country.

The original TPS for Haiti was first granted after the 2010 earthquake, but successive extensions under previous administrations turned a temporary measure into a long-term pathway that undermined American workers and strained resources.
