A student is dead after falling from a fourth-floor balcony at Benjamin Franklin High School in Los Angeles’ Highland Park neighborhood Wednesday afternoon, and video obtained by local news shows a brutal classroom fight in the minutes before he went over the railing.
Los Angeles City Fire said it was called to the campus for a reported fall. Firefighters found a student who had fallen from a four-story building and rushed him to a hospital.
The Los Angeles Police Department later confirmed he had died, according to KTLA. LAPD described the victim as a male juvenile. Police have not released his name. FOX 11 Los Angeles reported the student was 18.
According to the news outlet, the death followed a physical fight inside a classroom during instruction. Video obtained by the station shows a student wearing a backpack repeatedly punching a classmate with reddish hair while a teacher screams for them to stop. After the fight appeared to ease, the student in the backpack landed one more punch.
The reddish-haired student then left the classroom. Later footage shows him walking the fourth-floor corridor, grabbing the balcony railing, lifting himself over the side, and dropping four stories.
A student witness told FOX 11: “I hear stuff rumbling, falling, and I look up and I see kids fighting. I see a kid getting hurt pretty bad… [he] throws himself over the fourth floor.”
Another classmate, junior Leah Diaz, told NBC Los Angeles the halls filled with fear after fourth period.
“When we got out, you could feel the vibe and see everyone’s faces; they looked worried, they looked scared… people crying. So emotional. It’s heartbreaking to see.”
LAPD has said there is no evidence of foul play, NBC Los Angeles reported. FOX 11, citing preliminary police findings, said investigators do not believe the victim was being actively followed or threatened at the moment he went over the railing.
The other student in the fight has been identified and interviewed. No arrests or charges have been announced. Police, school police, and the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner are reviewing video and witness statements, including whether head trauma from the fight left the teen disoriented before the fall. The motive for the classroom fight has not been confirmed.
News media are reporting that the teen died after a fall. If you watch the video closely, you can see that the railing comes up to about chest height, making it difficult to simply “fall” over it accidentally.
FOX 11 also reported, citing video evidence, that the student appeared to be chased by the alleged attacker.

Note: Social media users also pointed out that the classroom displayed the flags of China and Colombia, an LGBTQ pride flag, and what they described as a portrait of Mexican artist and LGBTQ cultural figure Frida Kahlo.

The Los Angeles Unified School District initially told families the campus was locked down for a “medical emergency.”
Los Angeles School Police said every gate and door would stay locked until law enforcement gave the all-clear, and that procedures were being followed under district policy. Principal Marine Davtyan later told the school community, through an LAUSD spokesperson, that privacy laws limited what could be shared and that mental-health staff would be on campus Thursday.
“The well-being of our school community remains our top priority,” she said, according to FOX 11. Parents brought flowers and candles to a growing memorial. Some mothers kept their children home.
