China’s Population is Just a Fraction of 1.4 Billion

China’s Population is Just a Fraction of 1.4 Billion

By Lei’s Real Talk

China’s massive population decline is now visible to the naked eye. Empty streets and deserted villages are everywhere. Few people still believe that China’s population remains at 1.4 billion.

To uncover China’s real population, we need to answer two key questions:
1. What was China’s population before the COVID pandemic?
2. What were the actual casualty numbers from COVID in China?

After addressing these two questions, we conclude that China’s true population is likely between 300 and 400 million.

Here’s what others had to say:

@pmuringer
The population of China is shrinking because they all moved to Vancouver.

@EsseQuamVideriSe7en
I just don’t see how c0v1d could have been so devastating in China yet had a death rate of less than 1% in the rest of the world.

@johngeverett
This is astonishing! This would mean that China has almost the same population as the United States!

@AjahnAchalo
I have traveled to India many times, and there are a lot of people in towns, provincial towns, big cities, on buses, on trains, on roads, everywhere!… it seems. I travelled to China twice last year, and on several 4 hour drives on four lane highways, there was practically no one on the roads at all!

@CloningIsTooGoodForSheep
The difference between the official and real population would explain why Chinese cities always seem empty.

@kevinrobb86
If you can find data on how much food is sold then that will give you an idea as here in the UK they did a survey of the major supermarkets on how much food they were selling and the data showed that they were selling more food than what the suggested population total would need so basically giving an indication of illegals in the country.

Just a note from someone who works with AI models: A statement by an AI model isn’t significantly more credible than a statement by a randomly selected stranger. It may be right, but the odds of being right are not better than the opinion of a random person.

We’ve known for the last decade that China has been lying about its population. We’ve known for several years that the one-child policy had a dire effect on Chinese society and demographics. It left a lasting condition of drastically lowered fertility even after it ended. I think the pre-pandemic population may be as small as you suppose, maybe even smaller.

But I don’t find the idea of a 50% fatality rate from COVID credible. Even uncontrolled pre-vaccine COVID was not lethal in more than 4% of cases. For China to have lost 50% of its population would mean there was something fundamentally different about the pre-existing health of the Chinese people or fundamentally different about the circulating virus itself.

400M is a pretty shocking number. However on a recent trip (2024 Q4) to Beijing and Shanghai I was shocked at how few people were on the streets, shopping and in the malls. China’a airports and train stations that I visited were equally empty, even in rush hour. On a trip to 2 villages, i was also shocked to see so few people there as well. My views are anecdotal only, but your number does make a lot of sense.

Let’s ask Bill Gates. He’s the one with the depopulation formula.

@stischer47
I was in Ukraine teaching ESL at a university in December 2019 when our Chinese students started reporting to us that there was some kind of flu that had escaped from a lab in Wuhan and people were dying on the streets. They were panic-stricken that they wouldn’t be able to get back home. Then two Chinese doctors reported the severity of the outbreak and they disappeared. The head of the WHO, who got his position because of China, announced that there was no problem, the Chinese had everything under control, no need to panic. We all know how that turned out. Then Xi locked down China with his Zero COVID policy. I would be surprised if there 500 million Chinese left.

The wolves will not be happy that the sheep are refusing to breed. Or are shocked that they’re running out of sheep after culling them.

@what-n9j
400 million is a staggering number. The world would be ablaze with this news. Why isn’t it?

@markolson2466
I’m in northern Minnesota and I am extremely grateful for you sharing your conclusions via critical thinking skills! I look forward to your future shared insights!

@terry_willis
There are 1.4 billion Chinese in total if you count all Tiktok bots and inflatable plastic dolls.

@TheRatlord74
If china is not containing its real population it’s because they are all elsewhere. the Chinese population of western countries is huge and they are very very quiet compared to other immigrant groups.

@Digmen1
There are so many other channels that show deserted streets, empty malls, empty houses, empty factories.

@zitherzon2121
The amount of benefits that each district receives are probably awarded based on the population numbers that they report to the national government. An excellent motive for each district to greatly exaggerate its population numbers. IMO.

@CamboMartyn
China’s population figures have often been overestimated, as city officials tend to inflate the numbers to secure increased funding—since allocations are based on population size.

@wheezysqueezebox7651
Rice vendors complain that they’re not selling as much rice, which seems like it would be a pretty basic food, even for people without much money…

@mawan5678
I’m from Indonesia, and lately there has been a lot new Chinese people in my country.

@billyruffian1426
It used to be said that there were so many people in China that if all of them jumped at the same time the impact would cause the Earth to move. I guess that’s one less thing to worry about now.

@truthseeker4841
If China’s population is actually 300-400 million, then what is China’s actual GDP and economic growth rate?

@markneilson1044
I believe there population is less. I visited Shanghai in 2011 and was surprised how few people were there. Almost no traffic on the streets.

@dtoften
If this was true, then Chinese people would notice the reduction in pedestrian and vehicular traffic along with the amount of antidotal statements of Chinese saying that half of their family is gone. Are we seeing this?

@cathie9614
Many people left China during the last twenty years. The U.S. is very populated with Chinese that left and became citizens. One thing I heard during the pandemic the crematorium were working 24 hours a day and the smoke was seen from our satellite pictures. There was also huge lines for people waiting to pick up their loved ones ashes.

@TheLilOlMan
This is crazy & very sad. My aunt is from China she was adopted by my grandmother when she lived in Germany while my grandfather was in the US Army.

@adambilge2834
I agree with the Chinese population of around 800 million before covid. But the US only had 1.16 million covid deaths. There is no way China had 400 million covid deaths. 30 million covid deaths is a more likely number. Together with the rapidly decreasing birth rate I estimate China’s current population at about 700 million. The “empty” cites are due to a combination of covid deaths being much higher in large cities together with the massive lose of jobs causing people to go back to their villages.

@flux_inverter4500
The drop in population would help explain why the real estate industry fell apart. Dead people do not buy homes or re-pay debt. Also, it would mean everyone would know more than a few people who died and may chose not to have children as a means of individual survival. Having kids is less food and money. Regardless of the actual population, not a good time to live in China.

@mn4056933
Large corporations are leaving China, because China doesn’t have the work force it had before, to produce the products for export!

@FloydMaxwell
The COVID death toll is wrong. The reason funeral homes got so busy was because there was a total lockdown for some months before that, so there was a BACKLOG.
