The German army is set to tap local defense startup Tytan Technologies to help it build a shield against drone attacks, Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung reported.
The Munich-based company’s technology has already been tested in Ukraine, where it has been partially integrated into the country’s air defense system. Building on that, Tytan is expected to be officially commissioned next week to develop a comprehensive solution for German military sites and critical infrastructure, according to the report.
The project will focus primarily on defending against drones categorized by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization as Class II, FAS said. These include Shahed models deployed by Russia in its war against Ukraine.
A contract would deepen a partnership between Tytan and the Bundeswehr’s innovation lab in Erding, northest of Munich, where the army operates an air base.
Europe’s biggest economy — and the European Union more broadly — lacks an independent air defense system. A recent spate of aerial incursions has reignited discussions within the bloc about building a drone wall and an air-defense shield as incidents, including Russian fighter jets entering Polish airspace, expose the region’s air defense vulnerabilities. Last month, NATO took the costly and unprecedented step of shooting down unarmed decoys that had entered Polish airspace.
Drone sightings caused havoc with flight plans at Munich Airport this week, prompting authorities twice to suspend takeoffs and landings. It follows similar incursions last month at hubs including Copenhagen and Oslo.
