NEW DELHI (AP) — Indian authorities on Tuesday carried out a cloud-seeding experiment over smog-choked New Delhi in an attempt to induce rainfall and clear the city’s toxic air, which has sparked anger among residents.
A plane sprayed chemicals into clouds over some areas of the Indian capital to encourage rain and wash pollutants from the air, which remained in the “very poor” category, according to air quality monitors.
Delhi conducted its first cloud-seeding trial in a bid to tackle hazardous air pollution. A Cessna aircraft from IIT-Kanpur and the Delhi government released silver iodide and sodium chloride over several parts of the city, hoping to trigger artificial rain. Cloud seeding — a technique first tested in 1946 — could soon become Delhi’s newest weapon against smog. Here’s how it works, what it costs, and why it matters
