Canada, Mexico, and the European Union are vowing retaliation as President Trump prepares to impose sweeping tariffs on foreign goods. The usual outrage from global leaders is already pouring in. But here’s the real question: if tariffs are so ineffective, why do these countries fight back so hard whenever the U.S. imposes them?
Canada is preparing to slap tariffs on $21 billion worth of American products, targeting steel, aluminum, and consumer goods. They call it a “direct attack” on their economy, but for decades, they’ve been happy to enjoy one-sided trade advantages. Mexico is adding a 25% tariff on U.S. steel and aluminum, claiming the move will hurt their industries. The European Union, predictably, is framing this as an attack on “global trade” while preparing its own retaliatory measures.
The outrage from foreign leaders isn’t about “fair trade.” It’s about the U.S. finally playing by the same rules everyone else does. For decades, other nations have used tariffs, subsidies, and currency manipulation to protect their industries while expecting the U.S. to play along. Trump is rejecting that arrangement, and they don’t like it.
President Trump will address the nation from the White House Rose Garden at 4 PM tomorrow, outlining the full scope of the new tariffs. They are expected to take effect immediately, with collections beginning Thursday. For the first time in years, the U.S. isn’t just sitting back while others dictate the terms of trade.
