American diesel crossed $6 a gallon for the first time as President Trump sought to pin the fuel crunch on Ukraine’s war against Russia—not the supply shock unleashed by his own Iran war.
Trump wrote that “The World’s Diesel price rise is mostly caused by the Russia/Ukraine War, not Iran,” after claiming Moscow and Kyiv agreed to stop hitting each other’s energy infrastructure. The Hill reported the national diesel average reached $6.23 a gallon Sept. 14.
The Ukrainian refinery campaign is real. It has cut into Russian refining output and added pressure to an already tight diesel market.
But Reuters identified a two-front crisis: Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries and Iran-war disruptions to Gulf shipping and oil supply. Saudi crude supply fell 2.3 million barrels per day in August after attacks on energy facilities, Reuters reported.
The Sonar 21 analysis argues the White House has inverted that hierarchy by making Kyiv the public villain while ignoring the war in Iran.
That war constricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which handled one-fifth of global daily oil and LNG supplies before the conflict. A Saudi east-west pipeline strike then threatened up to 4% of global oil supply, according to a second Reuters report.
Ukraine’s refinery strikes did not create the shortage alone. Trump’s Iran war added the Gulf disruption that turned a strained fuel market into a $6 diesel crisis.
