Polio Was Grossly Overdiagnosed. And Even at Its Peak, It Never Reached Epidemic Scale
By McCullough Foundation
Of 1,200 children hospitalized with polio, diagnostic testing later confirmed only a quarter actually had it. At the height of the outbreak in the mid-1950s, the number of children paralyzed or killed by polio was far smaller than the number of children with profound autism today. We declared a national emergency, built an entire public health infrastructure, and mandated a vaccine — for a disease that was never an epidemic.
That context matters when we talk about what we’re willing to mandate next.
